The Internet of Things is quickly moving from hype to reality, and as a result vendors and operators from all corners of the wireless industry are racing to pounce on the opportunity. That action has created a surplus of network technologies vying to connect the billions of IoT devices expected in the years ahead.
Indeed, according to Machina Research, fully 30 billion connected devices will be deployed by 2025, and 7 billion of those will be connected to cellular (2G, 3G and 4G) and Low-Power Wide-Area (LPWA) networks. Importantly, those figures dwarf the expected market for smartphones.
But which networks will succeed in this new IoT arena -- and which will fail? Already the network options range from EC-GSM to NB-IoT to LTE CAT M to Sigfox to LoRa to Wi-Fi HaLow to RPMA… and the list goes on. The glut is such that Machina Research has already predicted that at least one of these major technologies will be effectively “rendered redundant” this year.
This no-holds-barred executive roundtable discussion will delve into networks powering the IoT space, looking at the options presented both by top wireless carriers as well as the startups hoping to break into the market with their own unique network solutions.
